Welcome to our online water safety course.  All of the course content, video, and testing/evaluation materials are free!  You may access them anytime.

If you need a Certificate of Completion, there is a $5 administrative fee per certificate.

Certificates are typically emailed out within twenty-four hours of receipt of your request and payment.  Certificates of Completion are now "valid for one year from date of issue."  I've made several updates to this site during the past year (H1N1 information, VGB Safety Act, etc.).  It's important to take the time to refresh your knowledge of water safety issues each year.

Water Safety Education for Parents & Caregivers

 Page Updated July 2010

INTRODUCTION

  • A swimming pool is fourteen times more likely than a motor vehicle to be involved in the death of a child age four and under.

  • Seventy percent of all preschoolers who drown are in the care of one or both parents at the time of drowning.

Drowning is more likely to claim your child's life than any other accident.  There is a very real need to protect your child from drowning.

This online course was prepared to help parents and caregivers learn the about water-related safety issues and how to protect children from water-related accidents.

We regularly update this material.  If you have any questions or have water safety information to include here, please let me know.  aquatics@brownell.edu

NEBRASKA DEPARTMENT of HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES NEWS RELEASE JULY 2, 2008

"Drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for children ages 1 to 4 in the state, according to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)."

To take the course, read through each of the eight sections and then take the Self-Evaluation.  Certificates of Completion are optional and cost $5 per person.  It's not a very high-tech or flashy presentation; it's lifesaving information presented in a simple straight-forward manner.  A link to email me is located at the bottom of each page.  Feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.  I'd also like to hear any comments, suggestions, and personal water-safety-related anecdotes you'd be willing to share.

RESOURCES

The material for this course was originally obtained from various books and internet sources.  I never distributed any of this material when I taught the classes at B-T.  The classes were in an informal setting in the school library with no handouts or other presentation materials.  I had no intention of publishing any of this information in any manner.  However, due to many requests for the water safety information I've discussed in these classes.  I've put my notes into this online format.  In switching to the online format, I would like to credit all my sources, but am finding it difficult years later to know where I got all this good stuff.  Below are some excellent water safety resources and I'd be happy to publish more or fully credit anyone whose information appears here.  Information added since the course was first posted is fully credited.  I encourage water safety professionals to submit materials for inclusion on this site.  - Jeanie Neal   jeneal@brownell.edu
