PIRATE PATROL

Official B-T Swimmer Watchers

"We will finish with the same number of swimmers that we started with."

Pirate Patrol Swimmer Watchers are parent volunteers who provide additional surveillance during Physical Education classes.

During PE classes only B-T staff, faculty, and Pirate Patrol members will be allowed on the pool deck.  All spectators must watch from the spectator gallery.

Patrol members will be assigned an area of responsibility.  Swimmer Watchers are to watch the swimmers in the water and alert the teacher/lifeguard if a swimmer in distress is detected.

Swimmer Watcher Responsibilities:

  1. Report to PE teacher to receive a Pirate Patrol Badge, a whistle, and a surveillance post assignment.  Please be a few minutes early.  We do not issue Pirate Patrol badges once class has started.  You will be asked to sign the Pirate Patrol agreement each time you work.

  2. Report to assigned post.

  3. Watch the swimmersMost drownings at supervised swim areas happen when neither lifeguards nor other patrons notice that a victim has slipped below the surface.  This happens because the person providing surveillance fails to recognize the signs of drowning or is distracted from surveillance.  Do not assist swimmers with adjusting goggles, putting on caps, or anything else.  Watch the water.  Scan the area from the bottom of the pool up to the surface.

  4. Alert the lifeguard or teacher of any swimmer in distress.

  5. In the event of an emergency situation, please do not leave your post until all swimmers have cleared the pool.  (Swimmers have drowned in pools while everyone's attention was on another swimmer being rescued.)

  6. Please return your badge to the pool office once you are relieved from your post by the teacher.

Only a trained lifeguard should attempt a water rescue.

Pirate Patrol members are not lifeguards and should not attempt a rescue.
