 Backyard Pool Safety

A backyard pool can be a great source of fun.
But a pool can be dangerous just like a gun.

It's scary to think that this toy in the yard
can such a danger, but you see, there's no guard.

Swim only with supervision and a buddy or two.

Practice safe swimming habits,
and lock that gate when your through.

We swim for good times!®

The keys to preventing children from drowning are having the adults provide vigilant, active supervision while children are using the pool, and preventing unauthorized access to the pool.

Both of these are the responsibility of the adults in your life.  However, you should take responsibility for keeping your self safe.

Backyard pools are especially dangerous because children can get into them without an adult present.  DON'T!  Don't go anywhere near a backyard pool without your adult with you.  Be smart.

Use the swimming pool area for swimming.  If you are not swimming with supervision, stay away from the pool.  Don't play close to the pool where you might fall in or drop something in the water.

You can help keep your backyard pool safe.  Check to see that you have safety equipment ready in case it is needed.  Draw up a list of your own home pool rules.  Check to see that your pool fence is secure and that the gate lock works.

How can you help keep yourself safe?

Be smart.  Know that you can take responsibility and keep yourself safe by staying away from the pool when you are not swimming with an adult.  This has nothing to do with being a non-swimmer or a strong swimmer.  All kids, even the strongest swimmers, must stay away from the pool unless you are swimming with an adult.

Be patient.  Wait to use the pool until you have adult supervision.

Be a good sport.  Find some place else to play when you are not swimming.  Don't play near the pool.  Be proactive and help keep your pool safe.  Post a list of rules, check your safety equipment.  Check the fence and the gate to make sure they are secure.
