Hotel pools can be fun, exciting, and great.
But consider these things before opening that gate.
Is there a
lifeguard near? Are your parents here? Does the water look
clear? Where's that safety gear?
Check for the rules and
obey the sign. Be a sport, smart, and patient and you will be fine.

The two main safety issues at
hotel pools are water quality and pool access.
"Water Quality" means that the
water is clean and clear and safe for swimming. Sometimes hotel
pools have poor water quality. You can check for yourself.
Take a look. Can you clearly see the drain on the bottom of the
pool. Does the water smell ok? If the water is clear and
their is no overwhelming smell, you are probably good to go. If
the water doesn't look or smell right, wait a while and try again.
Water quality issues can arrive because lots of swimmers have been using
the pool. The hotel management can usually quickly correct and
problems and the water will be fine.
It's never a good idea for children to use hotel hot
tubs. Hot tubs need constant monitoring to keep them safe, and
children are often more susceptible to the illnesses you can get from
poorly maintained hot tubs. "No hot tubs for kids" should be a
hard and fast rule in your family. Be a good sport and don't even
ask to use the hot tub at a hotel.
"Pool Access" means that you
might be able to easily get to the pool from your hotel room. This
can be a problem. The pool should have a fence with a locked gate,
and you should know that you should never go to the pool without an
adult.

How
can you help keep yourself safe?
Be smart. Know that sometimes
hotel pools have water quality issues. Look at the water before
you swim. Can you clearly see the drain on the bottom? If
not, wait and try again later when the water is clean and clear.
Print out the Parents Guide to Hotel
Swimming Pool Safety and give it to your parents to take to the
hotel with you.
Be patient. You may have to
wait for your parents sometimes. You want to be safe. Do not
go through the pool gate until your adult supervisors are present.
Take your time. Be cool!
Be a good sport. Understand
that it's not safe for children to use hot tubs. Don't argue about
that rule. Find fun and safe things to do.
