Ahoy, Mates! This program is open to swimmers ages eleven through fourteen
who have the ability to complete a continuous 100-yard swim crawl stroke and a
continuous 100-yard swim backstroke. Shipmates is a volunteer program that
provides our young members with training and practical experience working at a
community swimming pool.
Participants must attend a training session. After they complete their
training they may schedule volunteer hours and help with the operation of the
swimming program.
PROGRAM GOALS:
-
To provide an educational and recreational environment within which participants
learn how handle themselves safely in and around pools.
-
To educate participants in the skills necessary to help others in an
emergency situation.
-
To educate participants on the mechanics of running a pool including customer
service skills, water chemistry, pool and locker room maintenance.
-
To educate participants on learn-to-swim techniques using our FACE-UP FIRST method.
-
To help participants develop a sense of the effectiveness of teamwork, and of
the self-respect that comes from hard work and accomplishing tasks.
-
To educate participants on the effect that good physical condition has on their
ability to accomplish tasks.
-
To develop among participants a sense of belonging and ownership in our
community pool.
Shipmates
training and valuable practical experience builds self-confidence and helps
