Safety Awareness & Fitness Education

 

Summer Skills earn Fall Fun!

 

You need three things to be considered safe in the water:  strong swimming skills, water safety knowledge, and practical experience.  Our summer swimming challenge will help you develop all three. 

 

Complete each task listed on the Challenge sheet.  Your completed challenge sheet is your ticket to more swimming fun this fall in the indoor pool at Brownell-Talbot School on the dates listed below.

  

   

  

Fall Family Swimming Dates

 

Noon to 3:00 PM on September 26, October 17, and November 14

 

 

Your completed Challenge Sheet is good for one family admission to Family Swim at B-T Aquatics on each of the dates listed.  Contact the pool or visit btaquatics.org for a list of pool rules.  You may be asked to demonstrate the skills you list as complete on your sheet.

Department's Southeast Precinct's 7th Annual S.A.F.E. event on June 7.

You must attend the S.A.F.E. event to participate in this program.

Have each task verified by a swimming professional: 

lifeguard, swimming instructor, or swim coach.

 

 

SWIMMING SKILLS:  Proficiency at these skills will help you be safe in the swimming pool.

Demonstrate a relaxed, motionless, balanced back float for 10 seconds.

From a relaxed, balanced back float, roll onto your stomach with your face in the water and then back onto your back again.  Reestablish a balanced back float position.

Jump into the water, recover to a relaxed balanced back float, swim a minimum of 15 feet on your back and exit the pool unassisted.    

 

 

WATER SAFETY KNOWLEDGE:  Study and practice until you can answer all three questions without looking at the answers.  Then, demonstrate that you can answer the questions.   Date:________  Initials:________

 

          Question:  Who is most responsible for keeping you safe in the swimming pool?

          Answer:  YOU!  Make good choices.

 

          Question:  What is the most important swimming rule?

          Answer:  Never swim alone.

 

          Question:  What is the most important swimming skill?    

          Answer:  a relaxed, balanced back float

 

 

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE:  Even when you can pass the skills challenges and answer all the water safety questions, you need to practice to be safe.  Visit a pool at least three times to practice your skills.
