Safe Swimming CAP Program

"C" -  Safe Children

June is Safe Children Month.

In addition to constant supervision from their parents, children need three things to be considered safe in the water:  strong swimming skills, water safety knowledge, and practice.  Here  is a fun swimming challenge for your children.  Complete each task listed below

CHALLENGES for CHILDREN

SWIMMING SKILLS:  Proficiency at these skills will help you be safe in the swimming pool.

Skill

Description

Demonstrate a relaxed, motionless, balanced back float for 10 seconds.

From a relaxed, balanced back float, roll onto your stomach with your face in the water and then back onto your back again.  Reestablish a balanced back float position.

Jump into the water, recover to a relaxed balanced back float, swim a minimum of 15 feet on your back and exit the pool unassisted.

WATER SAFETY KNOWLEDGE:  Study and practice until you can answer all three questions without looking at the answers.  Then, demonstrate that you can answer the questions.

Question:  Who is most responsible for keeping you safe in the swimming pool?

          Answer:  YOU!  Make good choices.

Question:  What is the most important swimming rule?

          Answer:  Never swim alone.

Question:  What is the most important swimming skill?

Answer:  a relaxed, balanced back float

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE:  Even when you can pass the skills challenges and answer all the water safety questions, you need to practice to be safe.  Visit a pool at least three times this summer to practice your skills.
